How to Continue Apple Care Subscription

While Apple devices are expensive to buy, you don't have to worry about the cost of fixing or repairing them if you have an AppleCare (or AppleCare+) plan. That's because AppleCare + subscribers enjoy huge discounts on product repair. Despite the benefits, there are valid situations that justify canceling an AppleCare + subscription.

Let's say, for example, that you no longer use your Apple device(s). Or do you plan to donate. It really doesn't make economic sense to keep paying for services you don't need. Canceling an AppleCare + subscription may seem like a daunting task, but it's actually quite simple.

Contact Apple Support

You can also cancel your AppleCare + plan by contacting Apple support by phone, especially if you paid in advance. Alternatively, go to the nearest Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Providers for assistance. Please note that you may need to provide at least one of this information / documents to cancel your AppleCare + subscription:

1. Sales receipt (or purchase order)

This is the document provided by the retailer detailing the payment plan or details for your device.

2. Device serial number

If you cannot find your device receipt, you can provide the device serial number. You will find this number on the packaging box or in your device's settings menu.

On iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches or iPods, go to Definitions > Generally > About. On macOS devices, click on the Apple logo from the menu bar, select About this Mac, and check the Overview guide to your Mac's serial number.

3. AppleCare contract number

This is also called the AppleCare Registration Number. See the "Web Registration Instructions" or "Getting Started" booklet that came with your AppleCare plan for this number.

If you don't remember this number or can't find the booklet, contact AppleCare Agreement Support for assistance. Please note that you will need to provide your device receipt and serial number to retrieve your AppleCare contract number.

Canceling Applecare+: Do You Get Refunds?

There is no definitive answer to this question. This is because there are two factors that determine whether you will receive a refund:

  1. Cancellation period: Refund eligibility is based on a 30-day window period, i.e. the time between plan purchase and cancellation. That is, you will receive a full refund if you cancel your AppleCare plan within 30 days of purchasing the subscription. On the other hand, Apple will offer you a partial refund if you cancel after 30 days of purchasing the plan.
  2. Coverage and Activity Status: You will receive a partial refund if you order any service or make any repairs under your AppleCare plan. Apple will deduct the repair fee and refund the unused percentage of the plan.

To check the services claimed on your plan, go to Apple My Support Portal, log in with your Apple ID details, select the device with AppleCare coverage and navigate to the recent activity tab. You'll find the number of cases or repairs claimed on your plan in the last 90 days.

Download AppleCare Plan +

You don't need to cancel your AppleCare plan if you're selling your device or donating it. Apple allows you to transfer your subscription to the new user. All you have to do is contact Apple support and provide AppleCare contract number, device sales receipt, and new user/owner details (name, address, phone number, and email address).

Too easy. However, please note that the service is not available in all countries and regions. Likewise, not all AppleCare plans are transferable.

There is an AppleCare cancellation fee.

It's worth mentioning that Apple charges a cancellation fee when you end your AppleCare plan. Think of it as a penalty for canceling your subscription. The fee is usually 10% (but not more than $25) of the plan value. Therefore, if you are canceling an AppleCare plan worth $270, Apple will charge you $25 as a cancellation fee, not 10% of the original amount (ie $27).
